Norton College is a specialist school for secondary students aged 11-19 in Worcester and Tewkesbury.
The College was established to meet the needs of a range of ‘very hard to reach’ students who have Education, Health and Care Plans that describe their complex social, emotional and behavioural difficulties and increasingly Autism.
Teaching Methods
The College aims to take young people on a journey from hopelessness through to hopefulness and from dependence through to independence. Bespoke learning programmes at our specialist school are created for each student to enable them to develop the educational, social and vocational skills to ensure they successfully integrate into adulthood and society.
Our Philosophy
By transforming the nature and look of a learning establishment, transforming the way we deliver the curriculum, and transforming the way we deal with the students, we expect to transform the outcomes by breaking down barriers to learning.
- We believe in creating an innovative and highly effective philosophy that is designed to remove the ‘barriers to learning’.
- We aim to build positive and purposeful relationships between staff and students.
- We have an overriding philosophy of ‘kindness and warmth’ and ‘compassion’.
Our Students
Norton College works with young people aged from 11-19 years who have invariably found learning in the mainstream environment challenging or have struggled to thrive and consequently arrive at the College feeling they have failed and cannot achieve. Whereas in fact it is our view that the educational system has failed to meet their particular learning needs. At Norton College, students are encouraged and supported to develop positive behaviours that will form a solid foundation for the future.
Norton College is a specialist independent provider that aims to positively support young people who have a range of complex learning needs through vocational courses and bespoke learning packages.
We offer a fresh start for students, where past behavioural issues will not be referred to and students will be treated as we find them; by staff who understand and are committed to our overriding philosophy of ‘kindness and warmth’ and ‘compassion’.
Home Support
Some students have complex needs requiring educational support at home while they adjust, adapt and integrate into college life. We work closely with these students in their own homes to build their confidence, enabling them to access the community. We are also able to provide the facilities for students to take academic qualifications in their own home if necessary.
Bespoke Learning Packages
Bespoke learning packages are designed around both academic and vocational courses and invariably are sufficiently flexible in order to accommodate individual learning styles for the students. Our aim is to move away from the ‘can’t do’ and ‘can’t achieve’ attitude that the majority of newly referred youngsters display and move towards a ‘can do’ and ‘can achieve’ attitude that will lead to future success and greater personal wellbeing.
Vocational Learning
At both of Worcester and Tewkesbury, the vastness of our space allows us to accommodate a wide variety of vocational learning spaces. We have sufficient space and staff expertise to allow us to organise and run new courses within a short space of time.
From carpentry to brickwork, landscape gardening to boat maintenance, there’s plenty of flexible vocational courses available that can be changed to meet the desires of the students.
Tewkesbury
The physical College environment at Norton College Tewkesbury takes advantage of a purpose-built modern learning environment which allows us to be highly flexible in our response to the needs of the students. The large amount of space available ensures that students can enjoy learning in a facility that is calm and welcoming but more importantly not overcrowded.
