Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Expedition

A Journey of Discovery and Resilience

Norton College Worcester

Four of our students from Norton College proudly completed the final stage of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award with a memorable expedition along the River Severn. Having already fulfilled the volunteering, physical, and skills sections, this two-day journey offered a valuable opportunity to put their teamwork, communication, and outdoor skills into practice.

The group began their adventure in the idyllic village of Upper Arley, where they were treated to a special send-off by the steam train of the Severn Valley Railway—a nostalgic and inspiring start.

Despite the unusually low water levels following a hot summer, the students set off with determination, paddling through open countryside while documenting signs of pollution and environmental impact along the way.

The early stretch of the river was serene and rich in wildlife, with the sight of kingfishers flying alongside the group providing a particular highlight. However, as they passed through the towns of Bewdley and Stourport-on-Severn, the effects of human activity became more apparent. Agricultural pumps, diesel boat engines, and discharge from water companies were among the pollutants observed, alongside increasing levels of litter.

Midway through the journey, the weather turned dramatically, bringing heavy rain and strong headwinds. Despite the challenging conditions, the group demonstrated impressive resilience and teamwork, arriving at their campsite after six hours of paddling. They set up camp in the rain and cooked their evening meal just before nightfall, later retreating to their tents for a well-earned rest, enjoying music and card games.

Day two brought new experiences, including navigating through river locks and witnessing the dramatic drop in water levels—nearly six feet—as they continued downstream. The final leg of the expedition was a peaceful paddle toward Worcester, passing elegant riverside homes, the racecourse, and finishing just before the cathedral.

This expedition was not only a celebration of their achievement but also a testament to their growth, perseverance, and environmental awareness.

We are incredibly proud of their efforts and the way they represented Norton College Worcester throughout the journey.
