Norton College Worcester Students Complete Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expedition

At NCW are delighted to celebrate the achievement of five students from Norton College Worcester who have just successfully completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition along the River Wye.  This is a significant milestone in each of the students’ personal development and resilience.

Over three days of paddling and two nights of camping students demonstrated remarkable independence and self-sufficiency, taking responsibility for route planning, campsite organisation, equipment management and food preparation. Coupled with their practice expedition the previous week the group completed an impressive 70 miles on the river showing determination, perseverance and commitment throughout!

The expedition offered much more than a physical challenge. Students undertook environmental fieldwork, investigating the causes of pollution within the River Wye and collecting evidence to support their research. On their return, they confidently presented their findings to the Headteacher demonstrating their growing confidence and communication skills especially when faced with the Headteacher’s questions.

The personal growth displayed by the students throughout the expedition as they faced challenging weather conditions and physical demands and moments where morale was tested, they showed resilience, adaptability and outstanding teamwork. They supported one another throughout the journey, embodying our school values of:  Be Safe, Be Kind and Be respectful.

At Norton College, we are incredibly proud of what our young people have accomplished. Experiences such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award provide fantastic opportunities for students to develop confidence, independence, leadership skills and self-belief. The success of this expedition is a testament to the character, determination and potential of our students at Norton College Worcester.  Well done to all including the staff who accompanied them!
